When to go, and what is closed

Budapest's Christmas markets do not all start and finish on the same day, and the city changes character completely after lunchtime on 24 December. Here is how the calendar actually works.

The shape of the season

There is no single opening day. In the 2025/26 season the two central markets — Vörösmarty tér and Advent Bazilika — opened on 14 November, together with the City Hall Park market. Buda Castle followed on 28 November, Óbuda on the same day, Várkert Bazár on 29 November, and the smaller district markets such as Gozsdu udvar only on 5 December.

The closing dates spread out even further. Óbuda and Gozsdu finished on 23 December 2025. Vörösmarty tér's craft stalls stopped on 28 December and the square switched to its New Year's Eve programme. Advent Bazilika ran to 1 January, Buda Castle to 4 January, and City Hall Park to 10 January with its ice rink staying open to the end of the month.

No organiser had published 2026/27 dates when this page was written (21 September 2026). Every entry in the market list therefore carries last season's dates and the note that 2026 is not confirmed. Announcements normally come in October.

The quieter weeks

If you want the markets without the crush, the last week of November and the first days of December are the quietest stretch when everything worth seeing is already running. The weekend before Christmas is the busiest of the year in the centre, and the last three days before Christmas Eve are when the craft stalls are most picked over.

Early December has one extra thing going for it: Mikulás on 6 December, which is a genuine local occasion rather than a tourist one, and the streets are full of chocolate figures and golden birch twigs in the days before it.

24 December: the city stops

Szenteste, Holy Evening, is a private family occasion in Hungary, and the city behaves accordingly. Shops, supermarkets and food markets may legally trade only until 14:00. After that Budapest empties out: many restaurants close for the evening, the streets go quiet, and the visitors still walking around are mostly other visitors.

The markets shorten their hours rather than closing outright. In 2025 Advent Bazilika ran 11:00–15:00 on 24 December and Vörösmarty tér 10:00–14:00. If 24 December falls in the middle of your trip, plan it as a morning at a market, an early lunch, and then something indoors that you have booked in advance — a thermal bath, a concert, or a hotel restaurant with a fixed holiday menu.

Midnight mass (éjféli mise) is widely attended and is one of the few things genuinely happening that night. St Stephen's Basilica and Matthias Church both hold one, and both stand next to a Christmas market.

25 and 26 December, and 1 January

All three are statutory public holidays. Under Hungarian shop-opening law most retail shops, supermarkets and food markets must stay closed; the exceptions are small non-stop shops, petrol station convenience stores, florists and shops inside tourist attractions.

Shopping centres are a special case: the building may open but only its entertainment tenants may trade — cinemas, restaurants, cafés, bars and clubs. The shops inside stay shut, which surprises people who walk into a mall expecting to buy a forgotten charger.

Museums and most state-run attractions close on 24–26 December and 1 January. The thermal baths, the larger hotels and many downtown restaurants aimed at visitors stay open, usually with a fixed menu and advance booking required. The central markets stay open on 25 and 26 December with shortened hours — in 2025, 11:00–20:00 at the Basilica and 12:00–18:00 at Vörösmarty tér.

New Year's Eve

Both central markets run late on 31 December — in 2025 until 03:00 — and the squares become the outdoor part of the city's New Year's Eve. Public transport night services are reinforced. If quiet is what you are after, 31 December in District V is the wrong place to be.

Planning around the light park

One date is confirmed for 2026: the Story of Lights light park at Gödöllő opens on 24 October 2026 and runs to 31 January 2027, daily from 18:00 to 21:00 while summer time lasts and from 17:00 once the clocks change. It is closed on 1 November and on 24 and 25 December.

That gives you a usable anchor. Because the park runs into the end of January, it also works on the days between Christmas and New Year, when several of the district markets have already packed up.

Daylight and weather

Budapest gets dark early in December — the lights are on well before 16:00, which is when the markets start to look like the photographs. Expect anything from a mild, grey 8 °C to hard frost; snow in the city is possible but not reliable. The practical consequence is that a market visit is an evening activity and daytime is for indoor things: the baths, the museums that are open, the covered Great Market Hall.
