Getting around Budapest at Christmas

Every market in this guide is a few stops apart on the BKK network, and you will not need a taxi. What catches visitors out is the ticket: how much it costs, where to validate it, and the one route where a city ticket is not enough.

The short version

Budapest is compact and the markets sit close together. Vörösmarty tér, the Basilica and City Hall Park are all in District V, within ten minutes of each other on foot. Buda Castle is one funicular or bus ride across the river, Óbuda is a HÉV stop to the north and Margaret Island is a tram ride. A car is a liability in December; public transport is not.

Everything is run by BKK: four metro lines, trams, buses, trolleybuses, the suburban HÉV railway and the river boats. The four lines meet the rest of the network at Deák Ferenc tér, where M1, M2 and M3 interchange — if you are lost, that is the station to aim for.

What a ticket costs

These are BKK's published 2026 fares. They are the same in December as in any other month.

For a two- or three-day market trip the 72-hour travelcard usually wins: it pays for itself at about twelve single journeys, and in December you will make more than that because you will be hopping on a tram every time your hands get cold.

How to buy one, and where to validate it

Buy in the BudapestGO app, at the ticket machines in every metro station and at the larger stops, or at a BKK customer service point. The machines take cards and have an English menu.

Validation is where visitors lose money. A paper single ticket has to be validated at the start of the journey: in the metro that means the orange punch machines before you go down the escalators, on trams and buses it means the machine on board, immediately. A ticket in the app has to be activated in the app before you board — activating it when the inspector appears does not count.

Inspection is routine, not occasional. BKK inspectors in armbands stand at metro entrances and exits and board surface vehicles, and the surcharge is collected on the spot. Travelcards do not need validating each time, which is another reason to buy one.

Which line goes where

M1 (yellow) is the oldest underground line in continental Europe and runs from Vörösmarty tér up Andrássy út to City Park — it connects the main downtown market directly with the ice rink and the City Park attractions. M2 (red) runs from Déli pályaudvar to Örs vezér tere, which is where the HÉV to Gödöllő starts. M3 (blue) runs north–south through Kálvin tér and Deák Ferenc tér. M4 (green) connects Kelenföld with Keleti station.

Trams 4 and 6 run the Grand Boulevard around the clock and are the fastest way across the Pest side. Tram 2 runs along the Danube embankment and gives you the Parliament, the Chain Bridge and the Castle from a window seat for the price of a ticket.

The festive trams

During Advent, BKK and BKV run illuminated vehicles — the fényvillamos and a Mikulás bus — on ordinary service lines. They are not a separate tourist attraction with its own fare: you board with a normal valid ticket and ride as you would any other tram.

In the 2025/26 season they ran from 28 November to 6 January, daily from about 16:00 until late evening, with no service on 24 and 31 December. The dates for 2026 have not been announced yet. Their live position can be tracked in the BudapestGO app, which is the only reliable way to catch one rather than standing at a stop and hoping.

From the airport

The 100E Airport Express runs 24 hours a day, every day, from Liszt Ferenc Airport to Kálvin tér and Deák Ferenc tér, every 6–10 minutes during the day. It needs its own ticket: 2,500 HUF, which you can buy and validate with a bank card on board. If you already hold a Budapest pass, a Pest County Pass or a Hungary Pass, there is a 1,000 HUF add-on airport ticket instead.

Ordinary single tickets and the 24- and 72-hour travelcards are not valid on 100E. This is the single most common ticket mistake visitors make in Budapest.

The one route where a city ticket is not enough

BKK tickets and passes are valid only inside the Budapest administrative boundary. The HÉV suburban lines run beyond it, and H8 to Gödöllő — the line you want for the light park — crosses that boundary. Over the holidays

On 24, 25 and 26 December and on 1 January, BKK runs reduced holiday timetables and several lines follow a Sunday pattern. The changes are published in advance on BKK's timetable-changes pages and appear in BudapestGO. Night services are reinforced on 31 December. If you have a fixed appointment on one of those days — a train, a flight, a booked table — check the line the evening before rather than the morning of.
